Celebrating Geography, Partnership, and Place: Fifth Annual Winterfest 5K
By Brian Monheiser | Chief Growth Officer, T-Kartor
The Geography of Celebration
There’s something poetic about the Gateway Arch, and even more so about running around and beneath it, that magnificent symbol of movement, exploration, and connection. This year, that story takes on new meaning as the Gateway Arch Park Foundation embraces the power of geography, geospatial science, and cartographic design through a partnership with T-Kartor to create a geospatial map for the fifth annual Winterfest 5K.
Gateway Arch Park Foundation is the official philanthropic partner of Gateway Arch National Park. Their work ensures that this place—this symbol that is so central to St. Louis’ identity—remains vital, preserved, and well-supported for future generations. The Arch grounds don’t just make up a park; they’re a living geography lesson, a canvas of movement, making this partnership between T-Kartor and the Foundation for the Winterfest 5K a perfect match.
With this first foray into geospatial mapping for the 5K, runners have a new way to find connection with their hometown national park they are helping to uplift through the Foundation’s mission. With T-Kartor’s legacy in cartographic mapping and wayfinding, this year’s race route becomes more than a path to follow, it becomes the beginning of a story to rediscover a St. Louis landmark. Along the path, they will see the Old Courthouse and Museum at the Gateway Arch, whose exhibits they help preserve. They’ll also run through the park and riverfront, where their dollars help fund riverfront cleanups and grounds conservation projects.
Every turn, elevation, and landmark is beautifully rendered through precise cartographic design, guiding runners and spectators alike through an immersive experience. This partnership exemplifies what I’ve long believed…when geography meets design, the outcome is more than functional, it’s transformative.
This moment also reflects something larger unfolding across St. Louis. The region is doubling down on its geospatial future, investing in tools, technology, tradecraft, and talent that position our city at the heart of America’s next wave of innovation. And seeing institutions like Gateway Arch Park Foundation adopt these principles is proof that the geospatial mindset isn’t confined to labs or agencies, it’s reshaping culture, community, and commerce.
So as the Winterfest 5K participants take off beneath that shimmering steel arch, they’re not just running a race, they’re tracing the outlines of a story about place, one that reminds us how geography connects us all.
Wayfinding as Growth
This partnership is more than symbolic; it’s part of a larger movement that’s redefining what it means to invest in place. Wayfinding isn’t just about getting from Point A to Point B; it’s about understanding where we are, how we fit into the story of our community, and where we can go together. Gateway Arch Park Foundation and T-Kartor have created more than a race map, they’ve created a geospatial moment that showcases the power of maps to inspire connection, pride, and progress. It’s exactly the kind of work that keeps St. Louis at the forefront of America’s wayfinding renaissance, and reminds the world that geography is not just a science, it’s a shared story.
Gateway Arch Park Foundation is proud to partner with T-Kartor. To support the Winterfest 5K's growth and Gateway Arch Park Foundation's mission, T-Kartor USA donated the route map in-kind. T-Kartor USA is an international geospatial solutions company based in Downtown North St. Louis.
